چکیده
Cross-border migration has increased rapidly in recent decades. In response, most democracies have extended voting rights to their citizens abroad. Nevertheless, expatriate voter turnout tends be low. This article investigates a frequently proposed remedy—internet voting—based on case study of internet trials eight Swiss cantons. For causal identification, I exploit an unexpected federal intervention that led temporary suspension four the cantons, during which expatriates could vote only by mail. Using difference-in-differences estimation, find decreased among registered voters 4.1 6.4 percentage points. Placebo tests suggest pre- and post-suspension trends were close identical treated control cases. Overall, results this represents effective method increase electoral participation Still, remained well-below domestic even with available, suggesting high costs are not reason why abroad tend at lower rates.

Expected Benefits of Voting and Voter Turnout
This empirical study seeks to identify key aggregate-level economic and non-economic determinants of the expected benefits from voting and hence aggregate voter turnout. A unique dimension of this study is the hypothesis that PAC (political action committee) election campaign contributions, e.g., to U.S. Senate races, may reduce the expected benefits of voting and hence voter turnout because th...
متن کاملTelevision and Voter Turnout
I use variation across markets in the timing of televisions introduction to identify its impact on voter turnout. The estimated e¤ect is signi cantly negative, accounting for between a quarter and a half of the total decline in turnout since the 1950s. It is robust to a range of controls and alternative speci cations, and interacts intuitively with county characteristics. I argue that substitu...
متن کاملTwo Genes Predict Voter Turnout
Fowler, Baker, and Dawes (2008) recently showed in two independent studies of twins that voter turnout has very high heritability. Here we investigate two specific genes that may contribute to variation in voting behavior. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we show that individuals with a polymorphism of the MAOA gene are significantly more likely to have vote...
متن کاملEmployment, Wages and Voter Turnout
We argue that, since activities providing political information are complementary with leisure, increased labor market activity should lower voter turnout, doing so least in elections with ubiquitous information. Using county-level data, we find that increased wages and employment: reduce gubernatorial turnout; do not affect Presidential turnout; and raise the share of persons casting a Preside...

Given that voting is costly, election outcomes disproportionately aggregate the preferences of voters with low voting cost. We show that the correlation structure among preferences, costs, and perception of voting effi cacy can be identified, and explore how the correlation affects pr...
